Let me suggest a more patriotic number.

To their credit, they did follow this up with America the Beautiful. I don’t think they were really confederates, maybe just confused.

Also, this comic reminded me that I don’t really know how to draw trees, and that freaks me out because this graphic novel I’ll soon be illustrating has TONS of trees! Oh no! I need to start drawing more. Drawing parties! Let’s have some.

Yes … trees! Magnificent trees! When I was younger (way younger) I thought drawing a tree was a simple matter of symmetry. Just start with the trunk, then have it branch off to two huge branches – then have both of them branch off into two large branches – then each of the large branches would have two branches … which would have their own branches. Voila … a PERFECT tree.

But then I found out that there were NO perfect trees. Each was different, shaped by so many factors. Perhaps like snowflakes, no two alike.

But best of all was a couple years ago when I heard a story of a project where they actually TRIED to grow a PERFECT tree … so they enclosed it within a dome to protect it from the wind and weather. That should be just what was needed to make a perfect tree.

    Wrong.

Turns out that in order to grow properly, a tree NEEDS the wind … NEEDS the weather. Funny how creation is so ideal like that.

Then of course there is the Christmas Tree … I used to draw them with two jagged sides (like lightning bolts going opposite directions) … nice solid line at the bottom and a small square under it for the trunk. Voila … ANOTHER PERFECT TREE :)

I look forward to seeing your unique and unlimited variety of trees Breena! It will be fun!
