Africa Print Exchange

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

My friend Nate Grubbs is going to Africa to take photos for Lahash International, a wonderful grassroots agency in Portland that partners with African communities to bring care and support to those facing AIDS, poverty, disease, and war.

You can help Nate fund his trip by ordering one of his gorgeous prints of Africa (or any print of your choosing). He is calling it the Africa Print Exchange, and you can check it out here. It’s a great way to support an artist and an agency who are doing a lot of good for our African friends who are in need.

You can also check out Lahash International here. (I had the opportunity to do an illustration for them earlier this summer which I’ll post here soon.)

Thanks!

Zines and comics.

Monday, August 30th, 2010

My Every Single Thought was the funniest comic I’ve read in a long time. Anyone who has ever been single, at any age, would appreciate it. Check out the creator, Corinne Mucha here. Check out Clutch and other cartoonists on Tugboat Press. And if you missed the Portland Zine Symposium, check it out next year! I plan to have a table if I’m still around these parts. As for the R Crumb Genesis show, it’s still at the Portland Art Museum through September 19.

Queasy ain’t easy.

Sample from Chapters 3 and 4.

As I’m approaching page 200 in my graphic novel, I realized I haven’t posted any previews here in quite some time. So, that’s what you get today! Now a disclaimer, I tried to pick pages that were fairly neutral to the story and yet sampled the overall tone and style, but anytime you preview something you risk getting a glimpse into the story before you’ve actually got the full story. That said, read at your own risk. If you don’t want to read it until it’s finished I will not be offended at all! Or you can just look at the pictures without reading the words. Your call. (Note, these pages are pulled from different places in the story – there is no continuity here from page to page, in case you’re wondering why nothing makes sense.)

This is a great idea, though, and by next time I will have actual sketches!

You’re making me plush!

Saturday, August 21st, 2010

For my birthday, my brother Shawn commissioned plushies of my characters B and Conscience Cat, to be handcrafted by Kaeti at Tyler Poncho Toys. I could not have imagined a sweeter surprise when I pulled back the wrapping tissue to see these adorable plush creations of… well… myself! And my conscience in cat form!

Such amazing attention to detail, right down to my little messenger bag that actually holds an Easel Ain’t Easy sketch book, little buttons on my coat, and perfectly stitched facial expressions. And thanks to an inspired bit of velcro, B and CC can hold hands!

Kaeti details how she made these over at her blog. And the rest of her creations are just as awesome, so take some time to explore her website.

These plushies will be available to order, if you’re interested. We’ll have that page up soon, so stay ‘tooned!

Pile ‘em on.

I think I could sum it up by a wish that I expressed the other day when I was leaving Rachael in Maine: “I wish that everyone I love would be in one place with me.” I’d add to that, “I wish I could keep drawing comics forever.” As in, not have to take some crappy temp job when my graphic novel doesn’t leave me rolling in dough. I can’t complain, though, I really can’t. I’ve had an entire year to do what I love, no strings attached, and I am so thankful for that. And I’m thankful to have friends and family who will still listen to me when I get in a funk, even if they aren’t all in the same time zone. But plenty are, and I just gotta keep looking to the blessings. And even if comics are just a hobby, they’re a dang great hobby.

My next venture, maybe?

We all know I’m too much of a conscience cat to actually do it, but I love the idea of it.
